Tigers blow by Cumberland for 17th win

Behind a balanced scoring attack, 9th-ranked Georgetown easily dispatched of Cumberland, 87-53, on Saturday to improve to 17-2 on the year and 2-1 in the Mid-South Conference. It marked the 12th time in 19 games the Tigers scored at least 85 points.

The offense was slow to build in the game as the Tigers shot just 44% in the first quarter but still led, thanks to 6 forced turnovers. 6 Tigers tallied the 8 baskets made in the quarter, further speaking to the balance of the team. Georgetown led 21-15 after 1.

The defense went to another level in the 2nd as Cumberland made just 3 out of 15 shots from the floor with 3 more turnovers. The Phoenix also had no answer for Trinity Klock in the quarter. Klock played the entire 10 minutes, scoring 10 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. Klock and Ellie Wilkerson combined for 16 of Georgetown's 20 points as the Tigers took a 41-26 lead to the break. 

Cumberland's offense could not solve the Tigers D in the 3rd quarter either as the Phoenix had more turnovers (7) than made field goals (6). Teionni McDaniel made her impact on the game with 9 points in the quarter, en route to a team-high 22 on the day. The lead grew to 61-41 heading to the 4th.

McDaniel stayed on the gas in the 4th, scoring 9 more points on 4-4 shooting, while also contributing in a big way on defense. Cumberland was held to 3-13 shooting in the quarter, while Georgetown turned in its best offensive quarter of the game, scoring 26 points on 11 made baskets.

In total, Cumberland had more turnovers (20) than made field goals in the game (17). The Phoenix also did not make a single three-pointer in the game, missing on all 7 tries. Meanwhile, Georgetown connected 10 times from beyond the arc. The Tigers D also limited the Phoenix to just 1 assist for the game, compared to 19 for GC.

Teionni McDaniel finished the day 10-13 from the floor for those 22 points. Trinity Klock tallied a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double in less than 20 minutes off the bench. Ellie Wilkerson ended the day with 12 points and 5 assists. Izzy Lamparty tallied 7 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 steals, while Sophie Smith finished with 8 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Next weekend, the Tigers will take the annual swing through Tennessee as they head to Freed-Hardeman on Thursday night. Tip time is set for 6:30pm ET.
