1st Quarter dooms Tigers upset bid

A 1-13 first quarter and 3 total Georgetown points were all that Campbellsville needed to hold off Georgetown in a 71-67 CU win on Thursday night.

Georgetown's 1st point of the game came on a Trinity Klock free throw at the 6:14 mark, after GC had fallen behind 6-0. The CU lead grew to 11-1 before Klock scored Georgetown's only field goal of the 1st quarter as Campbellsville led 15-3 after 1. Georgetown missed 12 of 13 from the floor, 3 of 4 at the foul line and committed 5 turnovers. The defense kept Georgetown within reach as Campbellsville shot just 42% and turned the ball over 4 times.

Teionni McDaniel got the offense going in the 2nd. She scored 14 of Georgetown's 23 in the quarter, but Campbellsville's offense also came to life to keep GC at bay. Campbellsville shot 59% in the 2nd, but Georgetown's 5-8 shooting from beyond the arc allowed the Tigers to go into half trailing, 37-26.

Erin Toller came to life in the 3rd, scoring 11 of her game-high 20. Her 2nd three-pointer of the quarter got Georgetown within 5 at 48-43 with just under 4 minutes left. Campbellsville began to spread the gap back out by living at the foul line. CU shot 11-12 from the line in the quarter, making up for a 4-12 shooting effort from the floor. The foul shooting allowed Campbellsville to end the 3rd on a 9-4 run and take a 57-47 lead to the 4th.

In the 4th, early threes from AJ Stevenson and Erin Toller got the Tigers back within 6 at 59-53 with 8:31 to go. Unfortunately, Georgetown went the next 4 minutes, 34 seconds without a single point. By the time Ellie Wilkerson broke the drought, the Tigers trailed by 11 with just under 4 minutes remaining. The Tigers continued to fight but simply ran out of time. Erin Toller hit a last-second three for the final margin.

Erin Toller scored 20 on the night for Georgetown while grabbing 5 rebounds. Teionni McDaniel finished with 18 points, 5 assists and 2 rebounds. They were the only Tigers to end the night with more than 6 points.

Georgetown kept itself in the game with the long-range shooting as the Tigers knocked down 11 threes, compared to just 3 for Campbellsville. On the flip side, Campbellsville made up some of the difference at the foul line. CU finished +16 at the line, going 18-22, compared to just 2-6 from Georgetown. Campbellsville also finished +11 in points off turnovers (21-10).

Georgetown now heads to Cumberland on Saturday to close out the regular season. Tip time is set for 2:00pm.
