Jackson, McDaniel lead rout of Bluefield
With only 7 players available on Monday, Georgetown needed strong performances from everyone in order to improve to 11-1 on the season. The Tigers got just that. Teionni McDaniel scored 22 points, while Callie Jackson grabbed 14 rebounds to lead a dominant 85-44 win over the Rams.
Abby Varney got the Tigers going with 2 straight baskets to start the game. Bluefield countered with a 9-2 run to take a 9-6 lead over Georgetown 4 minutes into the opening quarter. After a steal by Varney, Izzy Lamparty scored inside to start a 16-7 run to end the quarter and give Georgetown a 22-13 lead after 1.
Bluefield started the 2nd on a 7-2 run to get within 24-20. Georgetown countered with consecutive threes from Jordan Rogers and Callie Jackson for a 10-point lead. After a Rams miss, Teionni McDaniel connected from downtown and forced a Bluefield timeout with the Tigers up, 33-20, at the midway point of the quarter. Georgetown gradually stretched the lead further to take a 43-27 edge to the halftime break.
The Tigers started the 3rd with a 3 from Teionni McDaniel and following a Sophie Smith steal, Callie Jackson scored inside to give Georgetown its largest lead at that point at 48-27. Bluefield answered back with 8 straight to get within 12 with 7:01 to go. The Rams would not score another point until there was 1:23 to go in the 3rd. In that time, Georgetown rolled off 14 unanswered to break the game wide open. The Tigers took a 67-41 lead to the 4th.
Georgetown's defense flexed its muscle even more in the 4th. Bluefield missed 12 of 13 shots in the quarter and committed 7 turnovers, five of which were Georgetown steals. AJ Stevenson scored 8 of Georgetown's 18 in the 4th as the Rams mustered a total of 3 points, leading Georgetown to the 41-point win.
In total, Georgetown tallied 22 steals in the game. AJ Stevenson had 7 on her own to go with 14 points. Jordan Rogers got the start and had 5 steals to go with 9 points. Abby Varney continues to impress in her freshman campaign as she ended with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Sophie Smith finished with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Every Tiger had at least 2 assists and 1 steal in the win. It lead Georgetown to a 34-9 edge in points off turnovers.
The Tigers have one more game before the holiday break. They take on Milligan this Thursday at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. The matinee will tip at 1:00pm.
