Defense crushes Phoenix in 42-point win
After a tough loss Thursday at Campbellsville, Georgetown returned home on Saturday looking to snap a 2-game losing skid. Cumberland entered the game having lost 6 straight and caught the Tigers at the wrong time. Georgetown unleashed a defensive fury that Cumberland had no answers for in a 90-38 win.
Making her 1st start of the year, Izzy Lamparty scored the first 4 points of the afternoon to get the Tigers going. 2 more free throws soon after gave GC a 9-0 lead. After a Teionni McDaniel steal, Sophie Smith nailed a 3 to give Georgetown a 12-0 lead just 2 minutes, 47 seconds into the game. Cumberland did not get in the scoring column until a three-pointer with 4:44 left in the quarter. The Phoenix hit another three later in the quarter, but that was all. Georgetown took a 20-6 lead after 1. The defense forced Cumberland to miss 9 of 11 shots and 9 turnovers.
The Tigers started the 2nd like the 1st. An Izzy Lamparty layup followed by threes from Anna Long and AJ Stevenson gave GC a 28-6 lead. Cumberland turned its offense around as the quarter went along. The Phoenix shot 53% in the 2nd, but 5 more turnovers stopped any potential threat. Georgetown also shot 58% in the 2nd with 8 players scoring as the lead grew to 42-25 at the half.
Coming out of halftime, Georgetown felt it still had a point to prove defensively. What followed was a rarity in the game. Cumberland turned it over 6 times in the 3rd, but most importantly, the Phoenix went 0-16 from the field. 2 free throws were all Cumberland could muster in the 3rd. Callie Jackson was Georgetown's bright spot in the 3rd as she scored 8 and grabbed 3 boards in just 4 minutes as Georgetown outscored Cumberland, 18-2, to blow the game wide open.
Cumberland's offense didn't fare much better in the 4th as it missed 16 of 19 from the floor and shot just 4-8 at the foul line. Georgetown's offense proved too much again as the Tigers put up a 30-spot in the quarter en route to the 90-38 win. In the 2nd half, Georgetown outscored Cumberland, 48-13, and held the Phoenix to 3-35 shooting with 8 turnovers.
Teionni McDaniel led a balanced offense with 16 points. She was 1 of 9 Tigers to score at least 7 points in the game. Sophie Smith finished with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Jackson ended with 10 points, 5 boards. Izzy Lamparty nearly had a double-double with 8 points, 9 boards.
The Tigers now look for revenge next Thursday as they host Cumberlands. Tip time at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym is set for 5:30pm.
