4th quarter woes cost Tigers again

For the second straight game, a tough 4th quarter cost Georgetown a win. This time it was against the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders. The Tigers overcame a woeful shooting start to take a double-digit 3rd quarter lead, but couldn't hold. Lindsey Wilson outscored Georgetown, 28-16, in the 4th for a 81-76, handing the Tigers their 4th loss in 5 games.

Georgetown struggled mightily in the first quarter with the free throw line being the Tigers only saving grace. 6-6 from the stripe partially offset a quarter in which Georgetown missed 16 of 18 shots from the field. The slump allowed the Blue Raiders to take a 20-11 lead after 1.

Things got worse before getting better in the 2nd as Lindsey Wilson scored the first 5 points to take a 14-point lead. The Tigers finally got going offensively with 6 minutes to play until halftime. Back-to-back baskets from Kayra Freeman and Izzy Lamparty cut a 13-point deficit down to 8 at 31-23. Teionni McDaniel followed soon after with a 3-pointer to get GC within 5 with 4 minutes to go. The Tigers drew as close as 3 before a late Blue Raider jumper gave LWC a 42-37 lead at the break.

After an opening Blue Raider basket in the 3rd, Sophie Smith knocked down a 3 that ignited an 11-0 run to give Georgetown a 48-44 lead with 6:46 to go in the quarter. The Tigers continued with the momentum and with 2:40 to play, Teionni McDaniel sank 2 free throws that gave Georgetown a 58-48 lead. Lindsey Wilson countered with 5 of the final 7 to take the game to the 4th with Georgetown leading, 60-53.

The Tigers went scoreless over the first 2 minutes of the 4th, allowing Lindsey Wilson to score 6 straight and get within a point. With 4:51 to go, AJ Stevenson scored inside for a 68-64 lead. Lindsey Wilson countered with an immediate three to cut the Tiger lead to 1. After a Georgetown miss, the Blue Raiders found space inside for a go-ahead layup with just under 4 minutes remaining. It was the final made basket for the Blue Raiders, but the foul line kept the Blue Raiders in front. Over the final 1:56, the Blue Raiders shot 14 free throws, converting on 12 to seal the upset win.

Georgetown's offense went quiet in the 4th again as the Tigers made just 5 of 14 from the field and missed 4 free throws. Teionni McDaniel led Georgetown with 21 points. AJ Stevenson had 13 off the bench, followed by 10 from Izzy Lamparty, who finished a rebounds away from another double-double.

The Tigers now have another quick turnaround as they make up a previously snowed out game at Cumberland on Monday. Tip time is set for 6:30pm.
