4th Quarter costs Tigers home opener

After a delay of over an hour due to a snow-covered Toyota Stadium, Georgetown Lacrosse kicked off the 2024 home slate against Webber International. After 3 quarters, the Tigers were primed for a win but the 4th quarter proved to be the undoing as Webber stormed back for a 12-11 win.

Madison Diaz and Saydee Bottoms got the Tigers off to a roaring start by scoring inside the first 3 minutes of the game. Webber responded with 3 straight to lead by one midway through the 1st quarter. Georgetown got the tying score with 3:29 left as Katerina Gilbert found the back of the net off a feed from Diaz to tie the game at 3 after the 1st.

Saydee Bottoms started the 2nd with her 2nd goal just 25 seconds in to put Georgetown back ahead. Webber's Makayla Senter answered with 2 straight as the quarter progressed and put her team back ahead, 5-4. Defense tightened up on both ends until the 1:17 mark in the 2nd when Madison Diaz scored on a 1-up possession to send the game to halftime deadlocked at 5.

Georgetown made its move in the 3rd quarter. Diaz scored again on the 1-up with 10:51 to go, followed by a goal from Katerina Gilbert just 14 seconds later to put GC ahead, 7-5. Just over 2 minutes later, Aubree Lair broke into the scoring column for a 3-goal edge. Freshman Hannah Voss then scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from Madison Catoggio with 4:01 to go to give the Tigers a 9-5 lead. Webber got 1 back but Gilbert finished off the 3rd with another goal. Georgetown took a 10-6 lead to the 4th.

Webber International began to turn up the physicality in the 4th and it began taking its toll on Georgetown. After a strong 3rd quarter, the Tigers could not find the net until there was 2:05 to go. Before then, Webber had tallied 4 unanswered, including during a 1-down set and the game was tied at 10. Hannah Voss scored the lone goal for Georgetown to give GC the lead back at 11-10. Webber then pulled off a stunner, scoring twice in the final 44 seconds, including the game-winner with 18 seconds to go for the win. It was all part of a 4th in which Webber outshot Georgetown, 15-2. Webber also won 6 of 8 draw controls in the quarter.

Madison Diaz and Katerina Gilbert each tallied hat tricks for the Tigers. Hannah Voss and Saydee Bottoms scored twice. Madison Haney stopped 12 shots in goal.

The Tigers stay home this coming week starting on Wednesday against Marian. The opening draw is set for 5:00pm at Toyota Stadium.
