Lacrosse earns 1st win of 2024

After a tough start to the 2024 season, Georgetown Lacrosse showed its toughness on Monday to grind out a 16-12 win over Concordia for the team's 1st win of the season.

The start looked similar to Saturday's loss to Indiana Tech. On this day, Concordia took the opening draw, marched down the field and found the net 15 seconds into the first quarter. Georgetown shook off the early tally and settled in. With 9:55 to go and a woman down, Melanie Wieland broke free inside off a pass from Katerina Gilbert and fired a shot home to tie the game. The goal ignited a strong day for both players.

Aubree Lair got into the act at the 6:09 mark, taking advantage of 1 of 26 fouls against the Cardinals. Lair beat the Cardinal keeper on a free position shot to move the Tigers ahead. Just 34 seconds later and a woman up, Madison Diaz fired a ball home off the free position for a 2-goal lead. Concordia scored twice late in the quarter around a tally from Gilbert and Georgetown took a 4-3 lead to the 2nd.

To start the quarter, it was Georgetown making quick work as Aubree Lair scored just 18 seconds into the quarter to spread the lead to 2. Aubree Lair scored 3 minutes later off a feed from Madison Catoggio to give GC a 6-3 lead. Georgetown would then be outscored 5-1 over the final 10:03 of the 2nd. Madison Diaz had the lone goal for Georgetown as Concordia stormed back for an 8-7 halftime lead.

The 3rd quarter proved to be the difference in the game as Georgetown took its defense to another level. Concordia turned the ball over 8 times, committed 8 fouls and only registered 2 official shots on goal with 2 others hitting a post. On the other end, Georgetown got 2 goals in 43 seconds from freshman Hannah Voss to retake the lead early. The Tigers got 2 more free position goals from Diaz and Wieland and a 5th goal unanswered from Katerina Gilbert. Georgetown led 12-8 late in the 3rd before Concordia broke through with tally for a 12-9 Tiger lead going to the 4th.

In the final quarter, the teams traded the first 6 goals, which kept Georgetown ahead by at least 2 throughout and negating a Cardinal comeback. Melanie Wieland and Katerina Gilbert connected for the last 2 goals of the day to lock up the win.

Katerina Gilbert finished the day with 3 goals, 4 assists and 3 ground balls. Melanie Wieland tallied a game-high 5 goals and put all 9 of her shot attempts on frame. Aubree Lair and Madison Diaz also racked up hat tricks. Diaz was dominant in the faceoff circle, winning 12 draw controls on the day. Madison Haney was strong in goal all day by making big saves in critical situations. She ended the day with 14 stops.

Georgetown also took care of business when needed on both ends, going 11-14 on clearing attempts and scoring on 6 of 7 free position shots.

The Tigers will look to build on the momentum on Saturday when they head to North Carolina to take on St. Andrews in the AAC opener. The opening draw is set for 11:00am.
