Haney breaks single-game record in crushing win

It can be argued that being a goalie in lacrosse is one of the hardest positions to play in sports. Madison Haney put on a display that made the game look easy. She tallied 13 saves on 14 shots to smash the program record for save percentage in a game as Georgetown crushed St. Andrews, 20-1, to kick off AAC play on Saturday.

Saydee Bottoms started the offensive onslaught with 2 goals in the first 1:12 of the opening quarter to set a pace that the Knights could never keep up with. St. Andrews got its lone goal at the 7:12 mark of the 1st to get within 2-1. Melanie Wieland took the goal personally and scored the final 3 of the quarter to give the Tigers a 5-1 edge heading to the 2nd. She added 2 of the first 3 goals in the 2nd to widen the lead. Madison Diaz scored twice in the 2nd, while Bottoms and Aubree Lair also found the net as Georgetown took an 11-1 lead and a running clock to the 3rd quarter.

The 3rd belong to Katerina Gilbert and Aubree Lair. The tandem combined for all 5 Georgetown goals as Georgetown continued to pour it on. Gilbert added 2 more in the 4th, leading to the 20-1 win.

Melanie Wieland and Katerina Gilbert each finished the day with 5 goals and 1 assist. Saydee Bottoms turned in the best performance of her young career with 4 goals and 2 assists. Madison Catoggio had a breakout performance with 6 assists. Aubree Lair and Madison Diaz each tallied hat tricks and an assist.

Madison Diaz also finished with 5 ground balls and 14 draw controls. With the stellar day in the faceoff circle, Diaz has now moved into 5th place on the all-time career draw controls list with 113.

Madison Haney's .929 save percentage easily broke the previous record of .800, which was held by Olivia Yakel.

Georgetown will come home on Wednesday, looking to go to 2-0 in the AAC against Tennessee Wesleyan. The opening draw is set for 5:00pm at Toyota Stadium.
