Lair, Tigers dominate Truett-McConnell

Georgetown's leading scorer, Katerina Gilbert, was out for Wednesday's game against Truett-McConnell, leaving the Tigers looking for someone to fill the void. Aubree Lair stepped up to the challenge and then some. Lair scored 6 times, picked up 7 ground balls and won 7 draw controls as the Tigers dominated their AAC foe for an 18-8 win, moving GC to 3-1 in the AAC.

Hannah Voss got the Tigers off and running with a goal just 28 seconds into the first quarter. Madison Catoggio found space in the middle at the 11:55 mark for a 2-0 lead. Truett-McConnell got 1 back but Georgetown countered with 9 straight goals for an 11-1 lead late in the 2nd quarter. In that time, Aubree Lair scored 3 and assisted on another. Melanie Wieland scored twice and added a helper. Saydee Bottoms, Madison Diaz, Maggie Byrd, and Hannah Voss also found the net. The running clock ended at the 1:11 mark as the Bears got back on the board to make it an 11-2 game at halftime.

The start of the 3rd was tough for the Tigers and for those in attendance as a brief, but powerful, hail and rain storm blew through Toyota Stadium. The Bears made things worse by scoring 3 goals in the first 1:19 of the 3rd to get within 11-5. Melanie Wieland had the answer by scoring twice to give GC a 13-5 lead midway through the 3rd. Aubree Lair added another tally late in the 3rd as Georgetown held TMU scoreless for the final 13:40 of the 3rd and took a 14-5 lead to the 4th.

Lair added another early in the 4th for a 10-goal lead but the Bears scored minutes later to stop the running clock once more. Hannah Voss got the clock moving again with a tally at the 9:32 mark for a 16-6 lead. Wieland and Lair added 2 more goals for good measure. TMU got 2 back in the final 4 minutes for the 18-8 final score.

The win snapped a 5-game skid for the Tigers and allowed them to keep pace near the top of the AAC with Reinhardt and Cumberlands. In addition to Aubree Lair's dominant showing, Melanie Wieland finished with 5 goals and an assist. Hannah Voss added a hat trick with an assist along with 2 ground balls and a draw control. Madison Catoggio tallied 4 more assists, giving her 27 on the year. Madison Diaz was everywhere as she finished with a goal, 2 assists, 8 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers.

Georgetown will stay in AAC play on Saturday as the Tigers head to North Carolina to take on Montreat. The opening draw is set for 1:00pm.
