Clark nets late winner vs Oakland City
Bekah Clark's sliding goal in the 77th minute propeled Georgetown to a 2-1 win over Oakland City in Tuesday night for the Tigers' 1st win of the season.
Georgetown and Oakland City took turns with possession and shot opportunities for the first 20 minutes with no real threats to show for it. The breakthrough came in the 25th minute after an Oakland City yellow card. Laura Beumala stepped into the free kick from 25 yards out and sent the ball perfectly over the Oakland City keeper's hands and into the upper-right 90 of the frame for her 2nd goal of the early season to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Oakland City tried for the equalizer 3 times over the final 20 minutes of the half but were denied each time by Daysia Thompson. Thompson's efforts preserved a 1-0 lead for Georgetown at halftime.
The Mighty Oaks continued to threaten early in the 2nd half but Thompson remained up to the challenge. Oakland City showed solid structure and form but could not consistently put shots on target and for most of the match, the shots that were on frame were rather routine in nature. The only blip was in the 64th minute after a Laiken Unger yellow card as Oakland City's Maggie Mubuto snuck behind the defense on the left side. Her 1st shot was stopped, but the rebound came right back to Mubuto and she was able to tap it past Thompson for the tying goal. Bekah Clark nearly had the go-ahead goal just 28 seconds later as a shot hit the crossbar and deflected away. Clark stayed with it though and took advantage of a bad reverse pass by Oakland City in the 77th minute. Clark stole the ball at the top of the penalty area and executed a sliding chip shot over the Oakland City keeper and into the net for the 2-1 lead. Mallary Bailey and Laura Beumala nearly added to the lead moments later but were denied. Daysia Thompson tallied the final 2 of her impressive 9 saves in the final 5:15 to preserve the win and the 3 points for Georgetown.
In total, the Tigers were outshot by Oakland City, 23-13, including a 10-5 disadvantage in shots on goal, but the 3 points went to the orange and black.
The Tigers are next in action on Saturday at Indiana East with a scheduled kickoff time of 7:00pm.
