Tigers take down Brescia on Senior Night
On a night where Georgetown honored 7 seniors before kickoff, the Tigers went on to send them home happy after a 1-0 win over Brescia.
McCall Burkhalter, Carson Smith, Emma Samuel, Sara Rodrigues, Laiken Unger, Makayla Howard and Olivia Possidento were all given their rightful spotlight pregame surrounded by family, friends and supporters. Emma Samuel was unable to play on the night but the other 6 seniors were all in the starting lineup as the Tigers got going against the Bearcats.
Offense was hard to come by for most of the night as the teams struggled to find operating room inside the opponent's box. The normally active Daysia Thompson did not record her 1st save of the night until the 16th minute. It was one of just 3 saves she had to record on the evening for the eventual clean sheet. On the other side, Georgetown had plenty of chances on goal but most were off-target. The first official shot for Georgetown came in the 28th minute off the left foot of Laura Beumala, but it was turned away.
The Tigers' breakthrough came in the 35th minute. Laiken Unger took possession at midfield and lobbed a perfect ball to Bekah Clark, who raced by the Bearcats' back line and tucked the ball home for her 5th goal of the season and 4th game-winner. The result would hold as Georgetown could not find another ball past Brescia keeper, Ashby Greenwell, who finished the night with 7 saves.
In total, Georgetown took 25 shots but only 8 were on goal. Brescia managed just 7 shots on the night with only 3 needing a Daysia Thompson stop. The Tigers also had the edge in set pieces as they did not concede a corner all night long and while earning 7 of their own.
Georgetown now gets time to rest for the final run of conference play to close out the regular season. The Tigers are next in action on Thursday, October 10th at Bethel. Kickoff from McKenzie, TN is slated for 6:30pm ET.
