2nd half goals doom Tigers upset bid
Goals from Bethel sub, Audrey LaRue, in the 54th and 61st minutes denied Georgetown's shot at an upset win on Thursday night as Bethel came from behind to knock off Georgetown, 2-1.
The Tigers had the 1st opportunity of the night, but McCall Burkhalter's 3rd minute shot was turned away by Bethel keeper, Alicia Perez. It proved to be a rare moment for Georgetown as the team mustered just 3 shots on goal for the entirety of the match. Bethel's 1st half chances were limited as well as Daysia Thompson did not have to make her 1st save of the night until the 11th minute. Her night would get much busier after halftime.
Georgetown's next chance came off the foot of Bekah Clark in the 22nd minute, but she too was denied a tally. Laura Beumala picked up the slack just a 1:45 later as she took a pass from Clark and buried it in the back of the net. In doing so, Beumala tied Clark with her team-leading 5th goal of the season and a 1-0 lead over Bethel. The Wildcats nearly had 2 answers just 2 minutes later. LaRue had a chance that was denied by Daysia Thompson. Just 26 seconds later, Bethel's Elle Carson took a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced away. Thompson and the Tigers held firm from there to take the 1-0 edge to the break.
After a quiet opening 8 minutes of the 2nd half, Audrey LaRue broke through for the equalizer to bring Bethel level at 1-1 with Georgetown. Her 2nd tally came in the 61st minute for a lead Bethel would not relinquish. The Wildcats kept firing on target as Daysia Thompson had to make 8 saves over the final 45 minutes to keep the Tigers in it. Georgetown's offense mustered just 1 shot in the half, a high try from Laura Beumala. Thompson made her final 3 saves over the last 4:46 to finish with 11 stops on the night, but it was not enough.
Georgetown is next in action on Friday, October 18th at Toyota Stadium against Lindsey Wilson. Kickoff is set for 6:00pm.
