Cathers has 47 assists in four-set win

Georgetown College women's volleyball hosted Thomas More University Thursday evening at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. Through three sets, neither team holding set point could finish it off set. However, when the Tigers (8-2, 6-2) got match point it was game, set, match 27-25, 25-27, 25-21, 25-21.

The Saints (3-7, 2-5) seemed on pace to take set one, but after taking a 20-15 edge something clicked for GC. The home team scored 12 of the next 17 points and erased two set points for the early advantage.

Set two was similar in reverse. The Tigers seemed on pace to take a two-set lead, holding edges of 17-11, 20-14 and even 24-21. TMU did not go quietly, though, erasing it all and leveling the match at one.

Set three was back and forth until Georgetown strung four late points together. Holding a 24-19 edge, GC saw two set points denied before Nina Hodges rose up for the kill, sideout and set win.

The Tigers used that momentum to open an 8-2 edge in set four, but the visitors were not letting down. The Saints pulled within one, 8-7, and again made the home team claw out a win. A late push broke the 18-18 tie as GC scored seven of the final 10 points.

Hitting percentages were tough with each team playing solid defense, but Peyton Randolph had a massive 21 kill match, while Hodges added 11. Brianna Cathers was the main floor general with 47 assists. She also added 16 digs and two block assists. Samantha Lincoln had 20 digs, while Haley Bergheger also had 10 digs and four aces.

GC is back in action 2 pm Saturday when the team travels to Williamsburg, Ky. for a match with University of the Cumberlands.
