Tigers swept by Ave Maria

Tigers swept by Ave Maria

After a grueling 5-set match against Brenau earlier in the day, Georgetown had less than 3 hours to rest before taking on Ave Maria in the nightcap of Day 1 of the Truett-McConnell Classic in Cleveland, GA. The Tigers couldn't over come a slow start against the Ave Maria Gyrenes and were defeated in straight sets, 25-15, 25-22, 25-18.

Georgetown (0-7) was unable to get going offensively in the 1st set, accruing just 8 kills against 8 errors. This served as the overall story of the match for the Tigers as just 31 total kills were tallied by the orange and black. Ave Maria (4-2) was able to take advantage and wear the Tigers down as the set went on, leading to a 25-15 set 1 win.

As it's been the case most of the year, Georgetown has used the set 1 break to make adjustments and pick things up offensively. The Tigers upped their kill total in the set to 12, but Ave Maria had enough answers in the set to win a tighter frame, 25-22, and go up 2 sets to none in the match.

Sensing the momentum, the Gyrenes turned in their best set of the match in the 3rd, combining 14 kills with just 4 errors and a hit percentage of .270, the best for either side in any set. It was too much for Georgetown as Ave Maria won set 3, 25-18, thus taking the match in straight sets.

Reese Speed kept the Tigers solid on the defensive side with 17 digs. Unfortunately, no Tiger had more than 6 kills.

Georgetown takes the court on Day 2 of the classic with matches against Keiser at 10:00am and host Truett-McConnell at 4:00pm on Saturday.
