Tigers rout UPike to open MSC play

Sometimes it takes one break to get momentum going in a season. Georgetown was finally able to break through in a 5th set against Truett-McConnell for a match win. The Tigers returned to Kentucky and kept the momentum going with a sweep at UPike to open Mid-South Conference play on Tuesday night.

The Tigers (2-8) were able to set a dominant tone against UPike (0-7) early in the match and were never seriously threatened by the Bears. Georgetown came out swinging with 12 kills and only 2 errors in the opening set and combined with a .455 hit percentage, cruised to a 25-14 opening set win. The strong start slowed some in the 2nd set as the Tigers committed 8 errors in the frame, but the defending was exquisite all night. UPike did not turn in a single set with more kills than errors. UPike also committed 8 errors in the 2nd set, propelling Georgetown to a 25-19 win in the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set 3 continued the overall trend: solid offensive play and strong Tiger defense. Georgetown turned in its 3rd straight set with 12+ kills, while limiting the Bears just to 6. Georgetown cruised in the 3rd to a 25-16 win and a sweep of the match.

Viannie Kazan paced the Tigers offensively with 24 assists while Karly McNeil kept the backline strong with 12 digs. UPike finished the match with no more than 7 kills in any set and a negative overall hitting percentage. The Bears finished with only 19 kills but 23 errors. Meanwhile, Georgetown finished the proceedings with 37 kills and 16 errors.

The Tigers will look to continue the momentum on Thursday night with a trip to Shawnee State and a shot to start MSC play 2-0.
