Tigers cage Lions

There are times when a quick turnaround can help a team overcome a tough loss. Georgetown proved this true on Saturday. After a straight set loss to Bethel on Friday night, the Tigers rebounded with an impressive 3-1 win over Freed-Hardeman and get back within 2 games of .500 in MSC play.

The Tigers (4-15, 3-5) came roaring out of the gates against the Lions (11-9, 3-5). Georgetown turned in 14 kills and .500 hitting percentage in the 1st set, to blow away the Lions, 25-15. The Tigers defending was also strong in the opening set, limiting FHU to just 7 kills. The 2nd set saw the errors pile up for Georgetown. 10 Tiger attack errors kept the Lions in the hunt, but continued strong Tiger defending made the difference. Freed-Hardeman hit just .091 in the set, allowing Georgetown to sneak away with a 25-23 win to go up 2 sets to none in the match.

Georgetown went for the sweep in set 3, but errors mounted once more. 11 errors and .077 hit percentage kept FHU in the set. The set stayed tight throughout, but the Lions were able to scratch out a 25-23 win to stay in the match and take the Tigers to a 4th set. Georgetown used the set break to adjust and focus on closing out the match. Head Coach Felicia Pace saw her team respond brilliantly in the 4th. The Tigers put their collective feet down and buried the Lions for good. 15 kills and a .414 hitting percentage denied FHU any chance to keep the affair going as Georgetown took the 4th, 25-15, and the match.

Georgetown turned in one of its best offensive performances of the year. 57 kills, 54 assists and a .237 hitting percentage on the day all stood out for the Tigers. Viannie Kazan and Ivona Zarin combined for 47 assists and 15 digs to pace ball movement all day. Gareth Bruce and Makena Walker turned in excellent days also, each tallying 14 kills and a hit percentage over .200.

The Tigers stay home next week, first taking on Shawnee State on Thursday night at 6:30pm at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
