Bears efficiency too much for Tigers

Georgetown changed its colors on Thursday night, opting for pink uniforms in the fight against breast cancer. While the Tigers did show fight on the court, it was the blue of Shawnee State that proved better on this night, knocking off Georgetown in straight sets.

Georgetown (4-16, 3-6) fell behind at the start of each set against Shawnee State (9-10, 4-5) and could not recover. The Bears also turned in one of their most efficient all-around nights of the season. Shawnee committed just 9 errors in the match and carried a hitting percentage of .395. Conversely, Georgetown committed 25 errors and a hit percentage of just .109. Kills, assists and digs were nearly identical between the two schools at the end of the night, but the Tigers just could not overcome the errors and also a Shawnee front line that had 10 blocks to boot.

Georgetown did have 15 kills in the 1st set, besting the Bears by four; however, the Bears only had 1 error in the set and a .500 hitting percentage, in taking the opening set, 25-19. Set 2 proved to be a nightmare for Georgetown with more errors than kills and an opponent hitting .435. Shawnee was never threatened in the 2nd set, winning it 25-12. In set 3, the action tightened up. Shawnee was unable to build an early lead as it did in the first two sets. Georgetown's floor coverage was its best of the night in the set. The Tigers would eventually take a 13-12 lead in the 3rd, but that would prove to be the Tigers first and only lead at any point in the match. The Bears would score the next 4 points to reassume the lead at 16-13. The Tigers would fight back to get within 17-16, but Shawnee would again score 4 straight to keep the Tigers at bay. Georgetown kept showing that Tiger Pride and would not go down easily. Down 23-20, the Tigers would go on a 4-1 run to level the set at 24, saving a match point in the process. However, a quick kill from the Bears and an attack error from Georgetown would fittingly end the night and give the Bears the sweep.

Georgetown stays home this Saturday to battle Pikeville at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. First serve is set for 4:30pm.
