Marques' double-double leads Tigers past IU Southeast

Freshman Setter Ines Marques has taken Georgetown Volleyball by storm to begin her career. As a steadying force on the court, Marques delivered the best performance in a Tiger uniform and she dished out 22 assists while tallying 11 digs as Georgetown rallied to knock off IU Southeast, 3-1, for the team's 2nd straight win.

It was a slow start for the Tigers in set 1 as the offense struggled to find rhythm. In a set with numerous extended rallies, Georgetown mustered just 3 kills, allowing the Grenadiers to take the set, 25-14, despite IUSE hitting just .138 in the opener.

Marques and the offense used the set break to turn the offense around and from there, it was solid and strong. In set 2, the Tigers tallied 14 kills and hit an impressive .278. The Grenadiers hung tough and actually had Georgetown down 24-21 and on serve. Olivia Mitchell and Makena Walker fought back with critical kills, and combined with solid defending, the Tigers scored the last 5 of the set to win it, 26-24, and level the match at a set apiece.

Set 3 saw Georgetown play from behind early in the set. The Tigers fell behind 12-6 but responded with a 9-3 win to tie at 15. Trailing 19-16, Georgetown went on a 5-1 run, with 3 assists from Marques in the stretch to go ahead, 21-20. Marques would add 2 more assists, leading Georgetown to a 25-22 set win, and a 2-1 lead in the match.

The 4th set was a back-and-forth battle with both teams taking turns in the lead throughout as the Grenadiers fought to stay alive. Leading 21-20, Georgetown got kills from Giara Ferrari, Gareth Bruce, and Makena Walker to close out the set, 25-21, and take the match 3 sets to 1.

Ferrari led the front line with 11 kills. Walker added 8, Bruce tallied 7, while Olivia Mitchell and Olivia Recktenwald chipped in 6 each. Viannie Kazan was solid in relief of Marques on the night, finishing with 14 assists and 6 digs.

Georgetown will make its long-awaited home debut against Rio Grande on Saturday. Opening serve is set for 1:00pm at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
