Volleyball drops opener in Missouri

After an eventful Friday that saw the Tigers have transportation issues, Georgetown eventually made it to its destination for the weekend and opened with a match against host, William Woods. The team was delayed in reaching the arena, which gave the home team the early advantage. While Georgetown fought hard in the 3rd set, the first 2 went the wrong way in a 3-0 loss.

A combination of strong play from William Woods and a slow offensive start for Georgetown in the opening set led to the Tigers dropping the opener, 25-15. William Woods scored the first 5 points of the set and never looked back, while Georgetown never got back within 4 points the rest of the way.

The Tigers regrouped early in set 2 and took 4 of the 1st 5 points. William Woods responded by going on a 9-1 run to race out to a 10-5 lead. The teams traded points for the bulk of the middle portion of the set. With Georgetown trailing 16-12, William Woods took over with 8 straight points, aided by 5 Tiger attack errors. While Gareth Bruce got 1 point back, William Woods finished off the set with a 25-13 win to go up 2-0 in the match.

Georgetown got consecutive kills from Makena Walker to start the 3rd set with a 2-0 lead. From there, the teams traded points and the lead in a tight battle. Another kill from Walker put the Tigers up 13-12, and the lead would grow to 17-13. William Woods kept things close but Georgetown was able to maintain a lead. The Tigers eventually worked to a 24-21 lead, but were thwarted as WW scored 3 straight to deny the Tigers the 4th set. Gareth Bruce gave the Tigers another shot at the set, but GC could not put it away. William Woods ultimately fought back and prevailed with a 28-26 win and the match sweep.

Makena Walker and Gareth Bruce each tallied 10 kills, while the setting combo of Ines Marques and Viannie Kazan combined for 26 assists.
