Volleyball drops MSC match against Cumberlands
After a split day on Saturday in Indiana, Georgetown returned home and to Mid-South play to take on Cumberlands at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. The Patriots proved too much on the night as they took down Georgetown in straight sets.
The teams split the 1st 12 points of the opening set before Cumberlands rattled off 4 straight for a 10-6, which sent Georgetown into a timeout. The Tigers came out with 4 unanswered to tie the set at 10, only to see Cumberlands return the favor right back. Ultimately, the run Cumberlands went on peaked at 10-3, giving the Patriots a 20-13 lead en route to a 25-17 opening set win.
Cumberlands continued its momentum early in the 2nd set by scoring 4 of the 1st 5 points to put Georgetown in an early hole. The Tigers clawed back and eventually grabbed a lead of 11-10, punctuated by kills from Ana Darr, Reagan Kupper, and Makena Walker. Cumberlands stayed strong though and countered with 5 straight to surge into a 15-11 lead. The Tigers cut the deficit to 1 at 18-17, but the Patriots turned in another run of 5 straight and 7 of 8 to close out the 2nd with a 25-18 win to go up 2-0 in the match.
Georgetown fell in an early 3rd set hole, 4-0, before Viannie Kazan and Ana Darr got the offense going. Cumberlands scored 5 of the next 6 for a 9-3 lead and a Tiger timeout. Georgetown worked back within 10-8, but the Patriots again turned in a 5-1 run for a 15-9 edge, sending the Tigers into their last timeout. Cumberlands kept the pressure on the rest of the way and closed out the set, 25-15, to complete the sweep.
The Patriots defense was too much for the Tigers on the night as Georgetown was limited to just .088 hitting and 1 service ace. Gareth Bruce and Ana Darr led the offense with 8 & 7 kills, respectively.
The Tigers step out of conference on Tuesday night as they take on IU Southeast. First serve from Davis-Reid Alumni Gym is set for 7:00pm.
