Late goal not enough in Tigers 1st loss

The Georgetown offense had been on fire heading into the match with Tennessee Wesleyan on Tuesday night. The Tigers tallied 13 goals in the 1st 3 matches of the year. On this night though, the offense could not find openings as Tennessee Wesleyan's defensive gameplan stymied Georgetown en route to a 2-1 Bulldogs win.

Georgetown (2-1-1) had trouble solving the Tennessee Wesleyan (1-2-0) defense from the early going. Opportunities were limited throughout as the Bulldogs shadowed Libby Miller with multiple defenders from the outset. The Tigers defending was solid for most of the night in turn. Neither team was able to muster a serious scoring threat in the 1st half and had limited shot opportunities on the keepers.

The Bulldogs were able to break through in the early stages of the 2nd half as a shot on the Tigers goal was saved by Madison Lonneman, but the rebound came right back into the box, where the Bulldogs' McKenzie Gillis was there for the finish in the 51st minute to break the scoreless tie. The energy level picked up on the Georgetown side at that point and the quality runs started coming. Libby Miller twice had shots in on the Bulldogs keeper but was unable to put them on target. Tennessee Wesleyan countered and when the Bulldogs Krista Elk Hardardottir was taken down inside the 18 box, she was awarded a penalty kick. Hardardottir snuck the PK past the right arm of Madison Lonneman to give TWU a 2-0 lead in the 67th minute.

Georgetown made an adjustment up front, moving Libby Miller from the wing to the point and it paid off. Carson Smith lobbed a pass 20 yards on to the right foot of Miller, who was able to find the target and bury the ball in the net, cutting the Tigers deficit to 1 in the 81st minute. It proved to be the last serious threat for Georgetown as the Bulldogs committed 6 defenders to the back line for the final 9 minutes, staving off any quality chances.

The Tigers mustered just 2 shots on goal in the match, while keeper Madison Lonneman had to make 6 saves to keep GC in the hunt. Georgetown will next do battle with the Taylor Trojans on Saturday, September 10th at Toyota Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1pm.
