Tigers shut out at #14 Cumberland

Georgetown faced one of its toughest tests of the season in unbeaten and 14th-ranked Cumberland on Wednesday. While the Tigers were able to stay within reach through the first half, the Phoenix pulled away in the 2nd for a 9-0 win.

Cumberland set an early tone by scoring less than 2 minutes in to the match and would added a 2nd goal in the 11th minute. For the next 25 minutes, the Tigers defense held strong by blocking multiple shots before they reached Daysia Thompson in goal. Thompson helped the cause by making 3 saves in that stretch. Cumberland kept the pressure on and found the back of the net in the 37th minute to push the margin to 3-0. From there, Georgetown would not allow another shot on goal the rest of the half to hold firm going into the 2nd half.

The Phoenix kept the shots coming to start the 2nd, scoring 3 times in the first 8 minutes with the last 2 coming just 18 seconds apart. With the score at 6-0, both teams turned to reserves to get those players valuable experience. One such player made her collegiate debut: Georgetown freshman keeper, Olivia York. She came on in the 75th minute to replace Thompson in goal. Her first test was a penalty kick just 90 seconds in, which Cumberland converted on. CU added 2 more goals to finish the day.

While Cumberland add ample chances for goals, their defending was equally top notch as Georgetown managed just 1 shot on goal (Olga Coto) on the day.

The Tigers stay on the road this Saturday when they travel to Asbury for a 7:00pm fixture.
